I’m Cathy and I’m a person-centred, supportive, and compassionate coach, living and working in Norfolk in the East of England.
I help people achieve their goals and face their future with greater self-compassion and optimism.
When I was a teenager, I developed an autoimmune condition that affected my physical and mental health. I slowly came to terms with the fact that I would have this condition for the rest of my life and I wondered what kind of life that would be? How would I cope with what was ahead of me? I felt stuck and hopeless.
After a while, I began to understand that, whilst my situation was often difficult to cope with, there might be another way to view what was happening. Instead of feeling lost in the physical and mental pain I was experiencing, what might life be like if I was able to look beyond the adversity that my illness created? Could I start to focus some of my attention on moving towards the things in life that mattered to me, despite my health condition?
I asked myself, “what kind of life do I want to live?” and I began to make changes to the way I was living.
I discovered that even in the darkest of times, it might be possible to view life through a different lens and move towards the light of change.
I started to learn about mindfulness and acceptance and sought out the support of some great therapists, coaches and healers. It wasn’t easy and I didn’t always get it right but after a while, life felt lighter and I began to feel more like the ‘me’ I wanted to be.
I took little steps. I started to build up a toolkit of skills to help myself navigate the difficulties I was facing. I put in some boundaries and found some self-care that worked for me. My confidence and sense of wellbeing grew and I began to live well with my long-term condition rather than feeling like I was always suffering with it. In time, I was able to set my direction towards a life with meaning and purpose and started to work with other people who needed support.
Becoming a coach
I worked in several areas of complementary therapies over the next few years and also pursued a career in project and event management in the charity sector. After a prolonged period of stress and overworking, I experienced burn-out. Again, I asked myself, “what kind of life do I want to live?”
I recognised that what I valued most was working with people to help them to overcome difficulties and create change in their lives. I knew from my own self-development that spending time working through inner conflicts and life challenges could be truly transformative.
It was in coaching that I found a true home for my values, skills and lived experience. In 2019, I began my coach training, first in Life Coaching and then in Resilience Coaching and I became a member of the Association for Coaching in 2021.
My subsequent work as a coach has been focused on helping people build resilience and psychological flexibility, overcome obstacles and move towards their life goals.
In my coaching practice, I draw from several different models of psychological and behavioural intervention that have been adapted for use in a coaching context. These include mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Coaching amongst others.
When I’m not coaching, I work for our local NHS Wellbeing service, supporting people in their mental health recovery through empowerment, skill-sharing and promoting hope. I am also proud to be a volunteer for Your Own Place, an organisation that seeks to prevent homelessness through mentoring support and tenancy skills training.
